STEM Entrepreneurship Competitions

Are you an innovator? Do you like using science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) to invent solutions to messy problems? If so, the SUDDS team needs your help!

Who: We’re looking for middle graders to help us test a new type of activity that we’re calling STEM entrepreneurial challenges. Students will use math in solving these challenges, but there is no prerequisite knowledge required to participate in the challenge. All who are excited about using STEM to solve real and messy problems are welcome!

What: STEM entrepreneurial challenges encourage students to use their knowledge of STEM to invent solutions to pressing issues. What makes these challenges different from other STEM challenges is that we want students to think like entrepreneurs, including developing business plans, because without money, even the best solution is unlikely to succeed!

Why: By participating in the STEM entrepreneurial challenges, students will apply and strengthen STEM skills as they work with a team to apply design thinking principles. Additionally, they will hone their presentation skills and learn to be succinct as they participate in a 5-minute pitch competition. To win, they will need to convince investors (panel of judges) that their solution solves an important problem and is applicable in a range of situations and for a variety of users.

Additionally, by participating in the challenges, students will be partners in the design process. The solutions they develop and the feedback they provide will help us revise our current challenges, design future challenges, and identify ways to support students and teachers in real middle school classrooms.

Where: Testing will take place at the SUDDS office space, located at 407 Gorman St. in Raleigh. Free parking is available on site.

When: We will be testing during the day, after school, and on the weekends. Please fill out the Google form below to help us identify times that can work for everyone who wants to participate.

If you are interested in participating, please fill out this Google Form to provide your name, contact information, and days and times you would be interested in participating. If you have any questions, please contact Michael Belcher at

Hi, read about this (or something similar) via the Homeschool posting Michael Belcher sent. My daughter is a rising 6th grader (so will be middle schoolers as of next week), a public school student (we do a bit of a hybrid education), and we live near Gorman St. and will be around for much of the summer. Plus we obviously have a bunch of friends in the neighborhood and throughout town who are middle schoolers.
Please let me know more about what the requirements are and what you are looking for.
